Obituary of Irene Mary Smith

Please share a memory of Irene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Irene Mary Smith, ‘Rarity’, to her friends and family was born on November 18, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois and departed this earthly place on September 10, 2017 at the age of 94 years young.

Raised Roman Catholic in Chicago, Rarity always found great solace in her faith and practiced it her entire life. She often attended mass daily.

During World War II she worked as a nurse’s aide with the Red Cross, tending to wounded soldiers who returned home. One of the GI’s was her future husband, Warren L. Smith, of Peoria, Illinois. They met on a blind date and were soon to embark on a sixty-year marriage that led them to Tulsa, Oklahoma after Warren earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology.

The marriage produced three children who loved their parents deeply. Once in Tulsa, Rarity had a long career in Real Estate Sales and accumulated over ten thousand hours as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Francis Hospital. Rarity was a long-time employee of Final Touch Cleaning and served as the Director of Operations for over 10 years.

Rarity is preceded in death by her beloved husband Warren L. Smith and her parents Arthur and Violet Roche. She is survived by her daughters Susan L. Mullen and husband Danny Mullen of Houston, Texas; and Sandra L. Mullins and husband Paul Mullins of Tulsa; as well as her beloved son Spencer Smith, also of Tulsa. Grandchildren include Lindsay Henderson and husband Jay of Tulsa; Brooke Taylor and husband Mike, also of Tulsa; Kristen McMackin and husband Brian of Houston; Leslie Odom and husband Mark of Austin, Texas; and Jay Mullen of Oklahoma City. Great grandchildren are Brady and Beau Henderson; Tatum Taylor; Will, Lauren, and Jay McMackin; and Charlie and Harris Odom.

Rarity Smith loved a party and she lived a good long life. It is the rare person who lives nearly a century and yet has friends say that she was with us for too short a time. A real ‘Rarity’ indeed.

Funeral service will be held Friday, September 15th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 4001 E 101st St, Tulsa, OK 74137.
