Obituary of Laverne Lineva Cox
As spring was abound in 1935, Laverne Lineva Jackson was born in Baton Rouge LA. On March 30th. The exact location is now either an office building, apartments or a parking garage. She was the second of Linden and Elizabeth’s 5 children (Leon, Laverne, Elvin, Stella Lynnand Wayne) and the only one of to be born in Louisiana. She was raised mainly in Houston’s Bellaire section, as well as the east side of Houston and Galveston. Once she commented that she and her siblings would walk across Houston. Not a feat worth trying nowadays. As her young life was taking place her family moved about Texas but generally came back to Houston. Her father was a painter and her mother took care of the home. Texas (as well as the rest of the U.S.) was still reeling from the great depression and WW2 was starting. Money was tight and hard to come by. At one point, her and 2 siblings were placed in an orphanage in Galveston. Of course, when they got back on their feet, her parents retrieved the 3. As time went on, Laverne married and soon after, Jerry came along. Then Phillip, Gary, Kenneth, Donna and Donald. Half of her children were born in Texas and the others were born in Florida, Georgia and Oklahoma. And April 1970 she moved to Lakeland Florida and she began to have a strong lifelong interest in genealogy. As time went on she researched and obtained many documents to help her find her ancestry. Over the rest of her life, she accumulated several boxes of documents. She loved to talk about genealogy. As her children grew up and left home, she became interested in another hobby, square dancing. She loved to dance. She was once photographed dancing with her husband at the mall. Sometimes you might catch her playing tennis with her two grandsons or taking them to Wendy’s for a frosty. But she always said her children were the best part of her life.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Linden, her husband, her 3 brothers, Leon, Elvin and Wayne, sister Stella, three sons, Jerry, Phillip and Gary, one granddaughter Alisha. Laverne leaves behind her three children, Kenneth, Donna (and Jorge) and Donald, two grandsons, Justin (Becky) and Sean (Lourdes), Jaimie, Tonya, and Rebecca, two great-grandchildren, Lucy and Sean Jr. She also leaves many nieces and nephews that she loved.
Laverne will lie in state 10-8p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2025, with family receiving friends from 5-7p.m. and her funeral will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2025, both at the Ninde Funeral Home and Chapel. She will be laid to rest in Bixby Cemetery.
