The Reverend James Clifford Murray, 89, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2025, in Jenks, Oklahoma. A devoted pastor, scholar, and family man, he leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, and compassion that touched countless lives across the country.
Born on February 11, 1936, in Los Angeles, California, James was the son of Clifford and Nellda Murray. His early years were marked by a deep curiosity about the world and a growing sense of spiritual calling that would shape his life’s work. His educational journey began at Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington. The journey continued at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, then at UCLA, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a minor in Philosophy. He pursued higher education with dedication and distinction at Princeton Theological Seminary, where he received his Master of Divinity.
James answered the call to ministry with unwavering commitment. Over the course of his long and impactful career, he pastored numerous congregations in several states, including Community United Presbyterian Church in Post Falls, Idaho; First Presbyterian Church in Mill City, Oregon; Community Presbyterian Church in Rancho Santa Fe, California; Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church in Wichita, Kansas; St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Metairie Ridge Presbyterian Church in Metairie, Louisiana. In addition to these fulltime roles, he also served as an interim pastor for multiple congregations during times of transition—offering wisdom and stability wherever it was needed.
Beyond the pulpit, James lived out his faith through simple acts of kindness and service. He found joy in gardening and walking outdoors—often using those quiet moments to reflect or connect with others. A lifelong reader with a love for learning, he remained intellectually curious throughout his life. He also enjoyed fishing—a pastime that allowed him to appreciate nature’s peace while sharing meaningful time with family and friends.
James shared 69 years of marriage with his beloved wife Anna Lee Murray—a partnership marked by enduring love and mutual support. Together they raised a family rooted in faith and compassion. He is lovingly remembered by their daughter Joanna Wulf (Dennis) and son Stan Murray (Cristine). His memory lives on through his grandchildren: Courtney Hoffman (Jon),
Allison Yokum (Michael), Kristin Vandervoort, Derek Murray (Lesteen), Dennis Murray, and Emily Alder (Brendan). He was also blessed with eleven great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy in his later years. He is also remembered fondly by two nieces and one nephew. James was preceded in death by his son Andrew Murray; his parents Nellda and Clifford Murray; and his sister Bette Bruce.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him and may his legacy continue to inspire lives rooted in faith and service. A Memorial Service will be held on September 6, 2025, at 3:00 PM at St James Presbyterian Church 11970 S Elm, Jenks, OK.
