Obituary of David Cole Sewell

Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
David Cole Sewell was born April 11, 1941 in Independence, KS to Albert Karl & Roberta Maxine (Cole) Sewell and passed from this life on December 22, 2020 at the age of 79. David’s life of love, joy, and success reveals his faith in God, his passion for hard work and engaging play, and his love and devotion to his family. After graduating from Independence High School in 1959, David fulfilled his service in the U.S. Army and graduated with honors from Pittsburg State University in 1963 with a degree in accounting. David then moved to Tulsa with first wife Linda (to 1974) and began working at Peat Marwick Mitchell where his years of experience prepared him in the early 1980s to leave the multinational and start an independent firm with business partner Orbie Taylor. The accounting firm Sewell & Taylor continues to serve clients throughout the region thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of its founders. David's hobbies reflect a passion for physical activity and the outdoors. Hobbies over the years have included running, sailing, and snow-skiing which he shared with his children. An avid sports fan, David's lifelong passion for golf led him to enjoy the game on courses across the country, including at his home course of Southern Hills. His kindness, down-to-earth manner and sense of humor brought friendships that spanned decades, on and off the course. A thriving career still left David time to enjoy a loving family life. David cherished his wife Anne, son Brad, and daughters Caroline and Mary. Recent years have shown David devoting attention to grandchildren’s sporting and performing arts events, special outings, and whole-family vacations. David avidly followed college basketball, especially the Jayhawks. His children recall attending Titans games at ORU, and David made frequent trips to KU with friends and family to attend Jayhawks games. Family meal time was enjoyed by all. David's spiritual life reflects a continually growing faith as his devotion to God deepened over time. David's Christian commitment came through in his work, his relationships to friends and family, and in his approach to life. David was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Roberta (Cole) Sewell; his wife of 42 years, Ruth Anne (Friedman) Sewell; and his sister-in-law, Kathy (O’brien) Sewell. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Brad & Monica Sewell, Caroline & Curtis Hughes, and Mary & Josh Garland; and his grandchildren, Kurt & Nick Sewell, Garrett & Ace Hughes, and Carter & Adeline Garland. He is also survived by his brother, Albert Sewell, Jr., and his brother’s children (David’s nieces and nephews), Sid & Leslie Bauguess, Kent Sewell, and James & Allison Andrews; and their children, Katy & Ethan Bauguess, Kain & Sadie Sewell, and Jordan & Morgan Andrews. A private family service will be held, and he will be laid to rest in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas.
