Jean Jarvis Bowen, long time Tulsa resident and member of Saint John's Episcopal church, passed away September 23, 2009. She was born June 11, 1923 the daughter of Howard and Ethel Jarvis. Jean was raised in Kansas City. Her fondest childhood memories were of spending her summers at her grandparents in Noel, Missouri. She was there to witness the filming of the 1939 version of "Jesse James" and had wonderful stories of seeing Tyrone Power and Henry Fonda walking the streets of Noel.
She moved to Tulsa in 1958 and raised her family here. At various times she was a Brownie leader, swim team timer, Boy Scout Troop 122 supporter, Holland Hall book fair organizerwhatever her kids were involved in she was always right there. Through all that time she was a dedicated member and leader of Saint John's church. She taught a Tuesday morning bible class for 45 years and held just about every lay ministry position available. She was instrumental in the design of many of the church's stained glass windows as well as the altar, Stations of the Cross and columbarium. After her kids were grown she worked in the office of Dr. Jerry Cravens for many years. In her "retirement" years she continued her work at St. John's as well as founding a chapter of The Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross in Tulsa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter Elizabeth. She is survived by her three sons and their spouses: Fillmore Bowen (Janet) of Cary, N.C.; Dr. Bill Bowen (Karen) of Tulsa; and Andy Bowen (Carrie) of Catoosa. Also 6 grandchildren: Ensign Quint Bowen USN currently serving in the Persian Gulf; Petty Officer Thomas Bowen USN of Seattle; Grace, Summer and Lilly Bowen of Tulsa; and her beloved Christopher of Catoosa, currently a student at OSU.
