Dr. Betty Louise Conrad, a long time Tulsa resident, passed away November 12, 2009 in Weatherford, TX, where she had moved in 2008 to be closer to her nephew and niece. Betty was born in Ranger, TX February 2, 1920. She lived in several places in Texas before her family settled in Bristow, OK when she was seven years old. Betty graduated from Bristow Junior College, Oklahoma A&M -now Oklahoma State University, and the University of Oklahoma Medical School. After completing her internship and residency, she returned to Tulsa in 1950. In 1953 she became Director of the Red Cross Blood Center. In 1966 she left the blood center to become Director of Contagious Disease Control for the Tulsa City-County Health Department where she served for more than twenty years. After retirement, she continued her medical service for over ten years by volunteering her time and skills to Tulsa free clinics. Throughout her career, she received a number of honors and awards including the 1989 Doctor of the Year and a 1990 Pinnacle Award given by the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women recognizing her for forty years of service as a physician. She was a member of a number of medical and professional organizations. Doctor Conrad was a world traveler and enjoyed visiting and exploring many countries around the globe. She attended and served at Centenary United Methodist Church for over fifty years. Dr. Conrad was preceded in death by her father and mother Thomas and Esther Conrad of Tulsa. She is survived by her sister Vera Pauline Ellis of Weatherford, TX, nephews Michael Ellis and wife Sharon of Nashville, TN and Daniel Ellis and wife Joyce of Weatherford, TX and niece Cherie Kendrick and husband Jack also of Weatherford, TX. She is also survived by great and great-great nephews and nieces Jason Ellis of Houston, TX; Adriane Arnold, husband Josh and children Sterling Kendrick, and Ian, Hailey, and Johnathan Arnold of San Antonio, TX; and April Knauss, husband Pat and daughter Morgan Ellis of Denver, CO. Dr. Betty Louise Conrad will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the Dr. Betty Louise Conrad Endowment Fund, Oklahoma State University Foundation - Tulsa for premed scholarships and the campus library or other charity of your choice.
