Obituary of Charles Moss

Charles Frank Moss was born on June 15, 1924 in Independence, KS to Joe and Alma (Porsch) Moss. Charlie passed away at his home, Monday, January 25, 2011 at the age of 86. He attended Independence Community Junior College and later, attended the University of Kansas. He answered the call to duty by enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and was involved in many battles in the Marshall Islands, including Kwajalein, Saipan and Tinian. Charlie was also one of the first troops to land on Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic measures he took and received the Presidential Unit Citation. After his honorable discharge, he decided once again to answer the call to duty and re-enlisted, this time he participated in operations against enemy forces in South and Central Korea. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. Charles was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, Akdar Shrine/Legion of Honor, York Rite and Scottish Rite. He participated in many events as a shriner, marching in parades and working at the Shrine Circus. He was actively involved in transporting children to the Shriner's Hospital in Shreveport for years. He was a retired Golf Professional, working at several golf clubs, both private and public courses. He was preceded in death by parents and his brother, Robert Moss. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Jim Burcham, of Tulsa, OK and Lisa and Rodney Walker, of Round Rock, TX; 2 sons, Joe Moss and his wife, Crystal, of Edmond, OK and Dale Moss, of Sand Springs, OK; 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Graveside service with military honors will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery and a memorial service will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 28, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church in Sand Springs.
