Obituary of Doris Burks Vaughan

Doris Burks Vaughan was born on September 9, 1925, in Monett, MO, to Robert Carl Burks and Lila Ellen (Borthick) Burks. Doris joined her family in heaven on Sunday, June 1, 2014, at the age of 88.
Doris was very elegant and artistic. She began instructing dance at age 14 and conducted a USO dance show during WWII. After graduating with a degree in Fine Arts from Ward Belmont, she traveled to NYC and obtained another degree in fashion design. She was employed as a high-fashion runway model and also appeared in Harper’s Bazaar. She was also a well-known watercolor artist in Tulsa.
Her refined demeanor and loving, flawless character will be remembered by all those who love her. She was spunky and vivacious, which never slowed down even to the end of her life. True to her name, Doris was very family oriented. She dedicated most of her life as a wife, mother, and grandmother. She is loved and missed by her family.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, James Broxton Vaughan in 1986; and her son, John Broxton Vaughan II in 2013. She is survived by her daughters, Janis Vaughan and Carla Murphy, both of Tulsa, and Cheryl Self, of Broken Arrow; 9 grandchildren, Jeff Pickens, Erik Williams, Marla Zumwalt, Ragan Vaughan, John Vaughan III, Jacob Williams, Amy Vaughan, Kyle Self, and Kevin Self; 19 great grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild.
