Virginia L. Fortney departed this life April 3, 2016 after a short illness at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. She is now reunited with her husband and son. Ginger was a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Virginia “Ginger” Lee Carter was born October 21, 1924 in Cardin, OK to John Herbert and Chrystal Gertrude (Isley) Carter. Virginia was given the nickname, Ginger, by her grandmother Sallie Carter Duckworth and it stuck. She graduated high school in Houston, TX spring of 1943. Ginger married Bruce Dallas Fortney on January 5, 1947 in Tulsa. In the following years they had two sons. Ginger lived in Tulsa for the last 69 years and was active in the Tulsa community. She loved to go antiquing and always found a bargain. She also had great interest and respect for the Native American culture.
Her beloved husband, Bruce passed away March 1, 1999. At the time of her death she was a member of the Tulsa Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Carter and son, Darell Bruce Fortney. Ginger is survived by her son, Dallas L. Fortney and his wife, Gloria; daughter-in-law, Mavis Land Fortney; grandson, Brent D. Fortney; great grandsons, Roger D. and Brent P. Fortney; nieces and nephews; great nieces, great nephews and many friends.
Graveside service 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 7th, at Memorial Park Cemetery Reverend Leigh McCaslin officiating. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations may be made to the Akdar Shrine Transportation Fund.
