Obituary of Herbert Wesley Davies

Herbert Wesley Davies was born September 11, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA to John Wesley & Sophie (Gaskill) Davies and passed from this life April 4, 2016 in Sand Springs, OK at the age of 90. Herbert was the middle child in his family and interrupted his schooling to join the Air Force during World War II. He served from 1946-1949 and was honorably discharged. He moved to Tulsa, OK in 1949 from Philadelphia, PA where he attended Spartan School of Aeronautics. He was introduced to his wife at a Valentines dance in 1954 and after a brief courtship he married Geneta on May 22, 1954. They were rarely apart from that day forward except for hospital stays. He coached his son’s baseball team and was thoroughly involved in family life. A man of faith Herbert sang in the choir, pioneered the library at Olivet Baptist Church, was a Sunday School Director and deacon. He participated in the annual Easter Pageant and lent his many talents to the betterment of the community. Herbert worked for several companies, Fritos Lay, Coca Cola, and Black Sibble Bryson before he ended up at Douglas at the Tulsa airport. After several layoffs he took the postal service test and started as letter carrier in 1958. He would retire May 31, 1985 and go on to be a 50 year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Jack Davies, Phil Davies, Jay Davies and Jimmy Davies. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Geneta Evelyn (Kilburn) Davies; his son and daughter-in-law, Duane & Joella Davies; his grandchildren, Brooke Waite & husband Shannon Waite, Shawn Davies & wife Mandy Davies, Brittany Murry & fiancé Jon Lee, Megan Edwards & husband Brock Edwards; and 12 great grandchildren. He will lie in state 10-8pm Thursday with family receiving friends from 5-7pm at the Ninde Brookside Funeral Home. His funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Olivet Baptist Church.
