Obituary of William Henry Hammons
Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
William Henry Hammons was born October 1, 1917 in Leslie, AR to Joseph Ephraim & Martha Jane (Stamper) Hammons and passed from this life on January 11, 2017 at the age of 99.
Henry, despite an eighth grade education, was prolific in mathematics; mastering algebra and geometry and skills employed by engineers afforded twice the education. He was a master structural steel worker combining the skills of a machinist, jig builder, tool & die maker and welder. He worked on jet planes for McDonnell Douglas and other various corporations as he was known for his fastidious approach to intricate detail. He would carry this over in his hobbies and became a master woodworker, exceptional gardener and even the occasional chef! Family recalls the pies he would make and how he would interweave the pastry lattice work with particular detail. An avid reader (especially Westerns), a Mason, a gun collector who reloaded his own ammunition and a longtime member of Springdale Baptist Church, Henry was an incredible man.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred P. (Curtis) Hammons; and their infant son, Joseph Franklin Hammons. He is survived by his daughters, Martha Jane “Susie” Kennett, Betty Jo Axelsen and Mary Yarus; his son, William Henry “Hank” Hammons, Jr.; 5 grandchildren; and 2 great grandsons.
Henry will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Ninde Brookside Funeral Home. A funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel.
