Obituary of Betty G. Shaddox
Betty G. Shaddox was born on Tuesday, March 28, 1933 in Claremore to Charles Ottawa Moore and Juanita Hinds Moore. Betty went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at the age of 84 years.
The Moores were blessed with two daughters, Betty and Gloria. Ott Moore worked as a land man for an oil company when the family lived in Claremore. When Betty was in the third grade, Ott got a job at Ozark Mahoning Company and moved his little family to Berryhill. It was at that time that Betty met a boy named Glenn Shaddox who lived just over the hill in Berryhill. A school teacher who lived with the Shaddox's used to say that Juanita couldn't throw out the dishwater without hitting Glenn Shaddox since he was often found at the Moore home.
Betty began taking herself to church at View Acres Baptist Church where she was saved and baptized. Betty was an excellent student with a sharp mind and graduated in 1951 as the valedictorian of Berryhill High School. Betty furthered her education at the Draughon School of Business in Tulsa and landed a job at the Harley Sales Company.
After Glenn joined the U. S. Navy, he and Betty married on Sunday, December 28, 1952 at the home of John and Katie Shaddox, Glenn's older brother and wife. Betty and Glenn bought a home in the Park Grove addition on Tulsa's westside and began their family. The Shaddox's had three children: Teresa, Randy and Jamie.
Glenn went to work for the Tulsa Fire Department and worked an extra job, like all firefighters do, running a farm and horse stable at 71st Street and South Sheridan Road. They moved their family to the farm for a couple of years before returning to their home on the westside. Betty and Glenn also moved their family's church from New Home Freewill Baptist Church to Red Fork Baptist Church. Betty shortly thereafter began teaching preschool 4 year old Sunday School at Red Fork for at least a two generations.
Betty was involved in her children's lives. She became a Campfire Girl's leader, a Cub Scout Den Mother, a homeroom mother and was active in the PTA. She also began working in the school cafeteria where she learned the secret of Tulsa Public School's bean chowder and cinnamon rolls. Betty was a wonderful cook. She could feed her family of five on a pound of hamburger meat and a box full of recipes. Betty's box of recipes is a family treasure.
Betty began working as the registrar at Webster High School in 1974 and continued until the birth of her first grandchild in 1984. After that, Betty's life was spent in care giving for her family. She helped in raising her three granddaughters: Casey, Meagan and Hailey. She took care of her mother and her mother-in-law during the later years of their lives. She also nursed her youngest daughter, Jamie, after a horrific auto accident. And she provided care for her husband, Glenn, while he battled cancer.
Betty and Glenn were able to travel to all 48 contiguous states and Alaska through Glenn's job as a charter bus driver for M.K.&O. Bus Lines. They would have made it to Hawaii but Glenn couldn't find a bridge to cross the Pacific Ocean. Glenn and Betty also owned several RV and motor homes and loved to travel in them as well.
Betty and Glenn were faithful members of Winnetka Heights Baptist Church where Betty enjoyed quilting with several of the ladies of the church. After a battle with cancer, Glenn went home to be with the Lord on September 19, 2003, shortly after their 50th wedding anniversary. Betty's life changed as she lived without the love of her life. She invested her life in her church and her family. She missed Glenn dearly but lived her life faithfully for her Lord. In 2012, Betty suffered a stroke which limited her severely. Her daughter, Teresa, moved into Betty's home and took loving care of her mother. Teresa put her life on hold to care for her mother and the entire family wants to thank Teresa for all she did.
Betty is preceded in death by: her husband of 50 years, Glenn Robert Shaddox and her parents, Charles Ottawa Moore and Juanita Hinds Moore.
Betty is survived by: her children: Teresa Shaddox of Tulsa; Randy Shaddox and his wife, Liz, of Tulsa; and Jamie Ferguson and her husband, Mark, of Tulsa. Her grandchildren: Casey Ferguson and her husband, Jesse, of Richardson, Texas; Meagan Ferguson of Tampa, Florida and Hailey Ferguson of Tulsa. Her sister: Gloria Cochran of Tulsa and several nieces and nephews.
