My mom and I shared in our love of animals and babies. My mom bought me a pony when I was 3 years old and taught me everything I needed to know about horses. She fostered the love I had for animals and when I brought home any injured, abandoned, critter of ANY type, she could never say no. She would help me bring them back to health and release them or they would become our family pet. When I was 13 we bought my horse, Missy, for $100. Missy was a young thoroughbred that had been badly abused and was “unable to break”. She was going to be put down if a home wasn’t found. My mom helped me break the unbreakable horse. She didn’t step in or take control, she just guided me as needed. I remember the happiness in her eyes as the bond grew so strongly between Missy and I. She knew that horse needed me and I needed that horse.
My teen years were tough and our relationship, at times, was near broken. At 17, I became pregnant with my 1st son. I was so afraid to tell my mom, but when I did, she didn’t scorn me or make me feel like I had disappointed her and God. She just said, “Well, I guess we’re having a baby.” She drove me to the hospital when I was in labor and cried as she saw me go through the pain of giving birth. She loved my son and seeing how deeply she loved him reminded me of how much she Always loved me. She was just as much a part of all my children’s lives as I was. She helped me raise them and took so much pride in every one of their accomplishments. She was the one person on earth that truly would, stop anything and everything to be there if we needed her.
