Dear Laura, I am so sorry for your loss. I think fondly of our time together in Greece and the few times we managed to get together in Houston. You and your Mom are a large part of those fond memories. All my best to you and your family. Jane Johnson-Murray

My clearest memory of Mrs. (Dr.) Bellows was that whenever I came over to visit her daughter, Laura - from early teens until recently - she inevitably asked when I thought I'd get my Ph.D., and in what. As a young person, I had never even considered getting a Ph.D. - and her questions made me think about it! I appreciated and still do the sense of inevitability around that inquiry and the confidence in me and others that seemed to drive it. I haven't earned a Ph.D., but if and when I do, I think she'll be very proud.
Love to all of you!

I didn't know Virginia very well. Reading her obituary and the moving tributes to her make me wish I had had the opportunity to get to know her better. Janice McCormick

I was late to the game in meeting Virginia, only at the READ group book meetings. I was delighted to finally get to know this legend. I always appreciated her distinct opinion and was in awe of her strength. I will miss her wit and her gentle smile. My deepest condolences reach out to Donald and the girls. Jocelyn Whitney

I first met Virginia in 1972 when we were grad students at the University of Kentucky. She had something of a reputation of not suffering fools lightly and as a newbie grad student, I knew I fell into that category. Fortunately, our dissertation directors were were not the same or even in the same area. As is often typical with grad school situations the competition was more about the students than the professors.
I helped Virginia move to Dallas in 1972 where she was teaching at SMU and then later for the Dallas school district. That was not the end of the moving. Every time I turned around she was in some new location. I could never keep track of her adventures. I settled in Austin where I began a 35 year career with the state and began teaching US and Western Civilizations at the local community college.
Soon Virginia was back in Dallas with an appointment to The University of Texas at Arlington. It wasn’t until a visit to Austin that she told me about her newest adventure— she had met Donald and he had proposed. I was stunned because it seem to come out of nowhere. But she was smitten. OMG was she ever smitten. I started hating him before I met him because he was the topic of every conversation.
The wedding in Tulsa was super. Her family was out of this world. The insiders look at Tulsa and its history was enlightening. But it was soon back to the travels and short term appointments until she landed at TCC. They moved and settled there. Donald very quickly secured a position and they were off to the races. Two really sweet and energetic daughters followed. Her love and support for Laura and Jennifer was absolutely unconditional, though Virginia always liked everyone to think she was calling the shots.
Jennifer and Laura moved to the Austin area which brought many visits from Donald and Virginia. We visited often. Every phone call, every visit, every dinner, every aspect of our friendship expanded. Their visits here or mine there were renewal. No matter how much time passed between seeing them, it was like only yesterday.
This past year I tried twice to fly to Tulsa to visit them. I knew Virginia was in declining health and of course I had my own issues. Unfortunately the weather intervened in both cases. I postponed until this year but the current circumstances really quashed that.
I am so glad that I called when I did. We had a brief but genuinely warm conversation. Virginia, I’ll miss you and your smile and your enduring sense of love of your country and and its history. And let me say thanks now for making a a small part of your family. You’ve done well. Donald and Laura and Jennifer are still in good hands. Yours.

I met Virginia as a colleague when we were both teaching at TCC. We became friends; our friendship deepened when she and Donald joined the book club at TCC's Northeast Campus. I enjoyed her direct comments about the books we read and the insight she brought. When we read a humorous book that took liberties with American history, Virginia just shook her head at the liberties. I teased her: "Remember, Virginia, this is fiction!" Another time we read a novel that included the horrors of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire as part of the story. Virginia drew on her knowledge of the incident and history of the time to give the group much greater insight into the fire which also added to our understanding of the story itself. I will remember Virginia's smile, too, which it up her whole face. My heart goes out to her family.

I will miss Virginia's friendship. Although we were colleagues at TCC, our bond was our daughters and grand-daughters. Her face would light up as she would share Laura's latest accomplishments. Jennifer and daughter Annika was a dear topic.. In turn I would update her on the latest of my daughter Angie and my grand-daughter Kassalina. Angie and Laura were friends at school and Jennifer and Angie attended music camps togerher.
Virginia and I are University of Kentucky alums. There aren't that many alums in Tulsa. I shall miss her ready smile and our visits at the TCC retiree luncheons. My deepest sympathy to the family.

While I didn't work extensively with Virginia, I count myself so fortunate to have served on several committees with her at TCC. I also knew of her long before I met her, for she had established herself as a well-respected colleague, a stellar professor, and a dedicated member of the Faculty Association board. Virginia is among the many faculty who worked hard to make TCC the excellent institution it is. I consider her a role model and am so sad that I won't see her again to tell her how much I appreciate her. May her memory be a blessing always. My deepest sympathy to the family.

These are photos from a trip to Greece in 2006, after Laura graduated from college. It was such a wonderful trip - we went with a big group from TCC, including longtime friends Amanda Blackman, Connie Murray, Jane Johnson-Murray, and Cherie Hughes, amongst others. My mom particularly liked the short cruise we took in the Aegean and seeing Ephesus.
