In his early childhood years, the family moved from Opelousas, LA to Montana, Mississippi, Shreveport, then to Tulsa. He graduated from Cascia Hall Preparatory School and received his Juris Doctorate from The University of Tulsa in 1957 and served as Assistant District Attorney for Tulsa County. He was a 4th generation attorney, following his great grandfather, Henry L. Garland who served as a Judge and a Senator in St. Landry Parish, LA and his grandfather, Robert E. Lee Garland who was the District Attorney of St. Landry Parish, LA for 40 years. Bob's law partners through the years were John L. Ward, Phillips Breckenridge and Ainslie Perrault, Jr.
He tried several famous cases, including defending William B. Franklin accused of double homicide of a Park Superintendent and Highway Patrolman and shooting with intent to kill a State Game Ranger. He defended Rex Brinlee in 32 felonies prior to a murder charge, co-counseling with Tommy Frasier and Pat Williams. He was a well-respected criminal defense attorney, had numerous minor criminal cases over the course of his extensive career and practiced law helping faithful clients until the day he died.
Bob enjoyed golf and fishing in Grand Lake and Canada, bird hunting anywhere quail and pheasant abound and cooking Cajun recipes handed down from his Louisiana ancestors.
