Born on December 25, 1922, Marie Menkoff was the last of the Baker Girls (Drucilla, Peggy, Marie, Edna, Lela, Lola & Maxine). Marie was the only one of the Baker Girls that graduated high school. Marie graduated from Berryhill High School in 1940. She Married George Menkoff in 1941.
During World War II Marie served her country by building planes in California, so she was kind of a Rosie the Riveter. After the war Marie worked at a department store in Kansas City, Missouri in order to support George and her family while he was completing his dental degree. During The Korean war the family lived in California and Virginia in order to be near George while he served in the Navy.
In 1952 they established a dental practice in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Marie was a capable office manager at George's dental practice for over sixty years. She also served as President of Women's Auxiliary to the Oklahoma Dental Association and was a member of the Brookside Lion Tamers for many years.
Throughout her life, Marie was a sister, a faithful wife to Dr George Menkoff, DDS, mother to three beautiful children: Barbara, Jimmy and David, grandmother to Susan and Jim, great-grandmother to Anthony, Daniel, Katlyn and Tabitha and one great-great-granddaughter Allyson and is loved by many nieces and nephews.
She was a devoted wrestling mom for Henthorne wrestlers where George was a coach and spent 10 years hauling that fantastic team to matches.
They remained faithful to military groups such as the WWII 385 Bomb Group which met every year at locations around the world. She and George planned the 1991 reunion of the 385th Bomb Group that was held in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They also attended Korean War Navy group functions.
Marie and George joined Trinity Methodist Church in 1952 and remained active members for over sixty years. She was a Sunday School Attendance clerk as well as a member of the women's church group. She was an active member of the Women's Christian Service Association. She frequently visited church members who were ill or in need of spiritual support. Together they traveled to Jerusalem with Douglas Fleming and many other Trinity church members in 1969.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 pm Friday, March 7, 2014 at Trinity United Methodist Church with a graveside committal to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to Trinity United Methodist Church, 3737 S. Peoria Ave., Tulsa, OK 74105.
