Obituary of Katina Bouakadakis

Bouakadakis, Katina Koumbias, 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 15, 2007 surrounded by her family. Katina was born June 28, 1925 in Chios, Greece the daughter of Michael and Irene Koumbias. As a young girl she served tirelessly as a nurse's aid during WWII helping wounded soldiers and families in her village. She married the love of her life James Mitchell Bouakadakis on August 19, 1945 in Chios, Greece. In 1949 she immigrated to America with her husband and three year old son, Mark. In the 1950's she and Jim opened the first of three locations for Jim's Coney Island which is still owned and operated by their family. On November 24, 1964 Katina was very proud to become an American citizen. Another highlight of her life with Jim was in 1995 when they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Greece with all six children and a host of relatives and friends. Her husband, six children, thirteen grandchildren, and six great grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life. Katina loved flowers and caring for the many rose bushes that adorned her yard. Yaya as she was known by her grandchildren will be forever missed. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years on November 24, 2003. Survivors: son: Mark Bouakadakis and his wife Rhonda; Daughter, Irene Hopkins and her husband, Marvin; daughter, Sylvia Howe and her husband Gary of Ft. Smith, AR; daughter, Mary Hardison and her husband John; daughter: Faye Pagonis; son, Michael Bouakadakis and his wife Paulette of Austin, TX; Grandchildren: James Ryan Bouakadakis and his wife Cindy, Matthew Aaron Howe, James Henry Howe, Ellen Katina Howe, Mark Lynn Howe, Michael John Pagonis and wife Mysti, William James Pagonis and wife Sarah, Joseph Michael Bouakadakis, Autumn Elizabeth Bouakadakis, Paul James Bouakadakis, Sunny Jeanne Bouakadakis, John Charles Hardison, II and Makaslyn Elizabeth Holt; Great Grandchildren: Addyson Nicole Pagonis, Luke Gregory Pagonis, Madylin Faye Pagonis, Ella Elizabeth Pagonis, Demitri William Pagonis and Holly Katina Bouakadakis. Her Sister: Loukia Gianakoudaki of Chios, Greece; her brother: Kosta Koumbias of Chios, Greece. Her nephew Michael Koumbias of Houston, TX and many nieces, nephews, and relatives in Greece, whom she loved dearly. Her "adopted" daughter, Christy Holt, held a special place in her heart. The family gives a special heartfelt thanks to all her caregivers, especially Maria Nelson, Anastasia Zaferes, Diane Roberts, and Stephanie Patton for their loving care of their mother. Trisagion prayers will be said Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the Ninde Brookside Chapel. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
