Obituary of Donald Toomey

Donald E. Toomey, age 80, died at home on Thursday, January 10, 2008, following a long and courageous battle with hydrocephalus and multiple strokes. He was born January 25, 1927, in the town of Chanute, Kansas to the late Beulah and Bert Toomey. He attended school in Chanute and was a graduate of Chanute High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and received an honorable discharge in 1946 with the rank of Carpenter's mate, third class, V-6, United States Naval Service. Combat awards earned during his service include Philippine Liberation, American Campaign Ribbon, and Victory Medal WW II. On August 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Wilma M. Stevens in Kansas City, Kansas. Mr. Toomey graduated from University of Kansas, Lawrence Kansas, in 1951, with a Bachelors degree in architectural engineering with mathematics minor. He was licensed as a Professional Engineer which demonstrated a commitment and expertise to his profession and career. In 1951, Donald and Wilma moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and he began working for Mid-Continent Petroleum Corporation. He continued with this company as it went through several name changes over his 38 year career. He retired from Sunoco in December 1988, and continued to reside in Tulsa, OK until they moved to Broken Arrow, OK in 1999. Don was a member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church where he served as past Chairman of the Administrative Board, Sunday school teacher of the Wesley class, as an usher, and helped rebuild the church in 1993 after a tornado destroyed the sanctuary. Don served as President for the Purchasing Management Association of Tulsa in 1987-1988. He also received the Outstanding Member Annual Award in 1989 from the Purchasing Management Association of Tulsa. Donald is survived by his wife of 58 years, Wilma, Broken Arrow, OK, his sons and their wives, Dan and June Toomey of Broken Arrow, OK, Terry and Carol Toomey of Broken Arrow, OK, Bruce Toomey and Celia Sorge of Vashon Island, WA, and his daughter and her husband, Donna and Dave DeVore of Broken Arrow, OK; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; one sister and her husband, Doris and Robert Rice of Miami, OK , two brothers and their wives, Roger and Patty Toomey of Sapulpa, OK, Richard and Joan Toomey of Carmel IN. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services for Donald E. Toomey will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 15, 2008, at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church 7903 E 15th Street in Tulsa, OK, 74112. The Rev. Sharon Fletcher-Taylor, pastor, will officiate. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa OK. Relatives and friends are welcome to the graveside for a Military Honor Guard, followed by fellowship at the home following services. In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established in his name at; Memorial Drive Methodist Church, 7903 E. 15th Street, Tulsa, OK 74112 New Frontier "Partners in Care", 5147 S.
