E. Alex Phillips was born October 18, 1921 in Blacksville, WV to Marion R. and Bertha May (Gregowski) Phillips. He passed from this life Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the age of 86. He was a 1939 Graduate of Blacksville High School and received his Bachelor's of Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Reno. Alex was a pilot in the US Navy during World War II where he was honored as a Navy Flying Ace receiving 8 Air Medals, 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 2 Silver Stars. He married Nancy Chapin in Pittsburg, PA on May 7, 1952 and they moved to Tulsa where he eventually formed San Juan Oil and Exploration Co. which he successfully ran for over 60 years. Alex was an avid supporter of The University of Tulsa sports programs and received their prestigious Centennial Citation in 1995. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy; daughters, Karen Abney and her husband John and Tracy Pelizzoni, all of Tulsa; sons, Chris and his wife Traci, Greg and his wife Cleasa and Eric and his wife Susan, all of Tulsa; brothers, Byron Elliot Phillips of San Angelo, TX and Marion R. Phillips of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 pm Sunday at Ninde Brookside Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 10:00 am Monday, April 21, 2008 at St. John's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Irongate Ministry at Trinity Episcopal Church, 501 S. Cincinnati Ave., Tulsa, OK 74119 or the charity of your choice.
