I worked for Nick & Jane at the original Metro Builders Supply Store about 35 years ago. My husband was stationed in the military on the East Coast & all of my family was in Texas. I lived in Tulsa with my daughter who was 1 year old. I was looking forward to spending a dreary Thanksgiving w/out family as my husband was not due home until Christmas. Nick & Jane bought me a roundtrip plane ticket to Houston so that I could spend the holiday with my family. They had another employee take me to the airport & pick me up. They gave everyone at work huge smoked hams for Thanksgiving that year. I put that huge smoked ham in my red American Tourister bag & took it to Houston for Thanksgiving. That bag smelled like smoked ham for years. Every time I came across that bag in my garage, I thought of Nick & Jane & the wonderful Thanksgiving trip they gave to me 35 years ago because they wanted me to be with my family. Praying for comfort and peace for Tina, John, and Stephanie.

What a wonderful ceremony in prayer last evening. It was beautiful to see all the people that cared so much for Nick. Initially, I was surprised there were so many people but why should I have been. It's obvious Nick touched a lot of lives during his life. I hadn't seen him much the past 30 years but every story I heard or have read describes the man I knew so many years ago. He never changed. He was real. I had to laugh when I heard so many describe him initially as stern or gruff but how they soon learned he was a teddy bear inside. Nick and Jane were the second set of parents for me that everyone needs. It was nice to see everyone loved him as much as I always will.

Nick was a positive influence in my life for over 20 years. I first met him as a new hire from Oklahoma City while picking up a truck being sent from Tulsa to the new OKC store in 1984. He was gruff and a little scary but he finished the meeting by pushing a $20 bill into my shirt pocket while smiling and telling me to drive safely back to OKC. Later, after I had been with the company for many years, he invited my wife and I to accompany himself and his wife, Jane, on a trip to Greece with all expenses paid. I will always remember the fishing trips that he put on for all of us down in Port Aransas and how he could really enjoy himself when away from the business. His memory is a lifetime one for me. My sincerest condolences to the family. You are all in my prayers.

Mr. Stavros, "Papou Nick" was a lively character who was dear to us. He gave bear hugs and had a charming smile. Patrick will miss playing golf with him and hearing his stories. I remember fondly visiting with him at John and Rebecca'a house, going out to his lake house and feeling like part of the family. I admire how he traveled with his family, fishing, hunting and celebrating. May his memory be eternal .

I will never forget the first day I met Nick. He nearly scared me half to death. His voice so strong and loud. He reminded me of my dad. Tough but soft. It was truly a pleasure knowing him and Miss Jane. My heart goes out to all the family, for he will be forever missed.

Words can never express my feelings for Nick. His boisterous, larger than life personality always made me smile! You always knew when Nick had entered the room. But underneath it all was a gigantic teddy bear. He lived life to the fullest and will be greatly missed. Love and prayers to the entire family. May his memory be eternal!

We all loved Nick in our own individual ways. I worked for and with Nick for 35 years as the company grew and expanded. There are too many stories to tell concerning the giant personality and indomitable spirit that were his trademark. Metro was always just one large extended family, with Nick at the head of the table. Nothing was ever too large a task to be undertaken nor too small to be ignored at Metro, or in the lives of Nick and Jane. As one of the "original" employees along with Charlie, Steve and Becca, I was able to be "inside the ropes" as we made decisions that changed Metro from being just a job that would pay for groceries this week, for all of us including Nick, into a successful regional company. We grew by treating customers just like we treated each other, like family. Metro customers were and still remain, family moreso than customers.
What a legacy he leaves behind. Larger than life, full of energy, looking forward to what can be accomplished tomorrow.
