Obituary of Jane C. Flynn
Jane C. Flynn was born January 27, 1936 in Teaneck, New Jersey to John Henry and Elizabeth (Clare) Driscoll. She passed away peacefully Sunday, November 26, 2017 at her home in Tulsa, OK surrounded by her family. Jane grew up in Northern New Jersey. Jane attended Holy Name Hospital School of Nursing in Teaneck, New Jersey, Catholic University in Washington DC, as well as St. Louis University School of Nursing in St. Louis Missouri, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Jane graduated cum laude with a Masters in Psychiatric Nursing from Washington University School of Medicine. While attending St. Louis University she met a handsome young medical student named James Flynn, at the same university who would become her husband of 57 years.
Jane spent her young life busy raising children, taking care of her family as well as continuing her education. Education along with culture, arts and music were very important to Jane. Over the years, she earned more than two dozen certifications as an Addiction Counselor. She engaged in continuing education throughout her career so that she might better serve her patients. Prior to opening her own practice, Jane was a teacher and nurse at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, New Jersey, and a Fellowship Staff Nurse at Deslodge Hospital in St Louis, Missouri. She earned a head Nurse position and was a Clinical Instructor at Cardinal Glennon Memorial Hospital for Children in St Louis.
In 1982, Jane opened a private practice treating addiction in Summit, New Jersey. Her practice thrived for four years until she and her husband moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Not one to let the wool grow under her feet, she then became a leader for a cancer support group at the American Cancer Society in Georgia. After moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jane served as Director of Assistance in Health Care at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. Jane had a compassion for others that drew people into her circle of care. Over the years, her positive effect on people changed many lives. She was amazingly generous, loving and kind. Jane maintained residences in both Tulsa, Oklahoma and Lake George, New York. She loved nothing more than filling the lake house with friends and family. Spending most of her summers in Lake George, she ran the house with the skill and organization that would make hoteliers jealous. Jane was a good cook and graciously fed every guest that crossed the threshold of the lake house. One of her favorite things was a good homemade soup and a nice loaf of bread. Over the years, Jane hosted three family weddings, endless nights of wild card games and various water sports all of which were filled with lots of laughter and love. Jane Flynn was truly the life of the party, more importantly she was the heart of the house.
Jane was preceded in death by her infant son, Peter; her parents; her sisters, Nancy Driscoll Tuori and Margaret Mary Driscoll Schmalzl; and, her brother, John Henry Driscoll. She is survived by her husband, James Patrick Flynn, M.D.; her son, Daniel Flynn of New York, NY; daughters, Cassie Flynn of Albany, NY and Maribeth Flynn Donohue and her husband, Rob of Summit, NJ; granddaughters, Madeline Grace Donohue and Margaret Mary Donohue, both of Summit, NJ.
