Mickey had an infectious laugh that once she started everyone joined in... we may not have known what the original funny thing was, but to laugh with Mickey was a truly joyful moment. Her eyes lit up when she would retell a story of her and Sue. They both got into trouble and it was always Sue that drove them there...Mickey loved every second of it too. I am the daughter of Sue, I would always try to surprise my Mom to reunite with her BFF since she moved out to Georgia. The last time we surprised her was at Ruth and Joe's new house. Mickey rolled out and they both rejoiced at the sight of eachother. The years melted away in those hugs and cries... their voices were the same that they remembered as little girls, their faces changed, their families had grown to adults, but their little girl souls leapt into each other's arms, holding on tightly... Gripping every little memory from Byron St. like grains of sand. Memories of their teen years dancing wildly around them...those moments were unlocked in each other's presence like a giant history book chock full of pictures, a thousand anecdotes from yearbooks bubbling to the surface so fast they didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Both of their adult daughters, Ruth and I, stood and witnessed this female bond that I can say for myself, was always in awe of that kind of connection. I Call it a Magnetic Girl Glue, a bond stronger than anything a human can create with their hands. It was born in their hearts, it played out on the sidewalks in Chicago back and forth a jillion times back in the 1940s and 50's, a deep loving emotional support system in their adulthood that was the ties that bound them closer than any other you'd ever see. Now my mom is watching from that little girl window off Byron, waiting for Mickey to come down the sidewalk, knock on the door and wait on the steps to play. I'm sobbing now, I miss planning their unsuspecting surprise get together at restaurants and living rooms. I miss you Mickey, my mom loved you more than anyone she knew. Rest in Peace...cause when she gets up there she'll expect you to raise some hell...ok, heck!
